I have been going to camp have for 11 years now. 9 as a camper and 2 as a counselor. Call me bias but there is nothing like camp Hazen. It may not be as built up as some of the other YMCA camps in Connecticut but the memories you make here are ones that will last a lifetime. I’ve read other comments about not being able to pick your activities and that is really not true. You fill out a sheet at the beginning of the session ranking activities you want to do. We have program time so of course you can’t always wander around. Plus, even if you can’t play b ball all the time I think it’s so valuable for kids to try something new. The food is summer camp food. Not amazing but not terrible in any way. The facilities are being rebuilt and new stuff is being added all the time. A beautiful new pavilion. New bathrooms in the boys village (girls soon to come) and a third Gaga pit are just a few. Camp Hazen is becoming liberal very quickly. That my one complaint. But camp Hazen is a second home.

I went to Camp Hazen for five years and now that I'm in college, I look back on those times as the best of my childhood. The staff was so friendly and made for awesome role models. The activities not only built friendships between the girls in my cabin, but also made me more confident in myself. I loved getting the chance to do things I'd never be able to do otherwise (windsurfing, rock climbing, etc.). The candle lighting ceremony made me feel as though I was part of something more than just a camp, it was a community. I've seen some negative comments on here referring to the bathrooms and how it was boring. You're at camp, it's called camp because you're in the outdoors and have to rough it a bit, that's what makes it fun. Also, you get out of it what you put into it. Having fun at Camp Hazen is as easy as breathing, you just have to put yourself out there and be open to new experiences/people. Without Camp Hazen I wouldn't be the person I am today and for that I thank them.

I've been going to Hazen for 7 years as a camper, and one as a counselor in training. I've been hired as an Assistant Counselor this summer. I have to say that every year it gets better and better. Counselors in Training (LEAs) get over all great training, although I feel some of the lessons were lacking. The hiring process is unique although it seems like somebody always doesn't get an important email about deadlines, which has happened to both me and my friends. Over all though, the activities are great, nothing more rewarding than topping the Alpine Tower. The Kitchen staff are the nicest people in the world, and every counselor I've worked with and been a camper for has genuinely cared about kids. I go back to Hazen as a counselor because Hazen showed me the importance of helping make kids be better people, and showing them inspiration and happiness. I highly recommend this camp! Financial aid is great so you can still go if you're short of cash - that's how I went for 7 years!!

This camp is my home away from home. I can't remember a summer when I did not attend Hazen, eiher day of resident. I completed the LEAdership program, which taught me more about myself than anything else ever has. I highly recommend this place!

I honestly loved Camp Hazen when I went there. I made a lot of really good friends who I still talk to. The food was good, it was like a home away from home for a week or two. At times people were not the friendliest but it's bound to hapen

My kids attended this camp for years and loved it. They went on the out trips as they got older and loved those too. I never had a problem with their camp experiece or supervision. Now that my younger one is in college she has applied as a counsler and has never had a call or email back. the hiring is awful for staff. it's a closed group. It is very disappointing to her as her years there were great.

My best friend and i went to camp hazen in 6th grade. were now 26 and still reminice on how horrific the time was we had here. Lets start w/the cafeteria. The staff was rude, we were each forced daily to take turns to cater to our whole cabin before we were even allowed to eat,the food was terrible,we find it very unsanitary that we needed to play"busser"and had to clean up other kids plates, silverware and half eaten food.Secondly we find it VERY unsafe;being mothers now,the lack of supervision that this camp has.EX.us being 10 yrs old were allowed to take out a canoe all by ourselves, getting stuck in the middle of the lake w a lost paddle and not knowing how to row back ourselves for over an hour in a storm until someone realized we were missing.3rd we were unaware that this is a religious camp(which is fine)but our families did not practice a specific religion.before meals and a special ceremonys we were forced to pray.Overall we think the activities were good but not worth$1200-$1500

Camp Hazen is amazing. I went for 3 years, and my only regret was not going to camp earlier! My LEA year was by far the best. Camp gets even better as you get older, you keep old friends and make great new ones. LEAs also have curfews and free time. You experience leadership roles while working with younger campers and you really get to make a difference. Staying at Camp Hazen for 4 weeks was an incredible, life changing experience. Camp Jewell is not a "country club camp." The facilities are great, but camp is still rustic, there are camp outs and hikes and plenty of time in the woods. Food is pretty good too. The staff are great, you can tell how much they love camp and it's great to see them year after year. Camp Hazen is simply incredible, some of my best experiences ever at this place.

the staff were very nice and hardworking......along with a very wide range of activities. This camp, in my opinion, is one of the best in the state. But, the facilities were a little dirty and such....but thats what camp is suppose to be. Over all this is where i want to be every summer.

A warm, friendly environment where you are made to feel welcome and at home. The staff are so lively, hard-working and so attentive. The facilities are great. Camp Hazen looks and feels like the way a supposed to look and feel. Their high ropes and climbing tower are amazing. Very professional. If you want a great camp in CT, this is it. this camp is pretty sweet. i think that it is in the process of getting better. the food was terrible, but i heard that was a new thing this year, so it will most likey get better. hazen doesnt fill up every session yet, but their counselor training program has gotten more competetive over the last two years, which means there will soon be better staff over all (this year some were totally amazing while i wondered why others even decided to come in the first place). i think that this in turn will cause more campers to want to come back and that hazen will be noted for being really really amazing in a few years. if you have two weeks free over the summer, you should check it out.

I went to this camp for 5 years. The downfall to this camp is that lately they have been getting more strict meaning it is less fun for kids. I can remember the days where we would each go up and get our own food instead of the nasty family means, and when you could buy as many sodas and candy as you want(after all it is camp) but i recommend the teen adventures, the ones i went on was a blast(cape cod biking)
