Click to report rating    7/23/16   5     5     5     5     5   My children 8,9 and 14 attended Camp Kupugani this summer. I had been looking for a good camp where they could do a multitude of activities and Camp Kupugani seemed the perfect fit. From start to finish the camp exceeded my expectations. From being able to see pictures everyday online of my kids having a great time to picking my kids up and hearing countless stories about what they had done. Each one of my children had an awesome time and they learned so much! On the ride home, they talked non stop about camp, their new friends, the counselors, staff and the owner and how great they were as well as a big thumbs up on how good the food was! And on pick up day, the feeling I felt in the camp was a feeling of family. I feel good as a parent to have chosen such a great camp that allowed them such a unique experience this summer and we already looking forward to next year! RID: 49811
Click to report rating    10/5/15   5     5     5     5     5   Our daughters are repeat campers for the past several years. The owners, staff, facility and other campers are all fantastic. A great alternative to the "traditional" camp experience! RID: 49213
Click to report rating    10/4/15   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Kupugani is a treasure. We live in the Chicago area and were looking for a diverse and nurturing camp for our 10 y.o. daughter's first sleep away camp experience. I'd say that we hit the jackpot! The staff was so diverse—the young women were of different races and backgrounds and from 3 or 4 different countries. The staff to camper ratio is really low. They have 2 swimming areas, and really nice cabins. When we picked her up she said that she had a wonderful time. She made a ton of friends, was challenged, and learned a lot about herself. She even loved the food! If you’re looking something beyond your typical camp experience I would recommend Camp Kupugani. The director is really invested, responsive to calls and emails, and really cares about the kids. He called after the first 2 days of camp to give us a progress report, and he even followed up after camp to see how she enjoyed her 2 weeks there. Camp Kupugani was a great experience for our family. I highly recommend it! RID: 49212
Click to report rating    9/22/15   5     5     5     5     5   This summer marks the 2nd year my daughter has attended Camp Kupugani. I found this summer camp by googling "girls+empowerment+camp." Boy did I luck out. The fact that I've sent my daughter here twice signifies that I found what I was looking for in a camp; the fact that she wants to go back next year signifies that she found what SHE was looking for in a camp. This camp offers more than activities, campfire songs and rustic cabins. Each activity is crafted to help the campers grow and push their comfort level...it's intentional. All you have to do is ask the camper how they feel after they've accomplished something that they were previously afraid to do. The camper/counselor ratio is incredible (something like 5:1) and from what my daughter tells me, that ratio is working. Again, that's intentional. These counselors interact with the kids, working as young adult mentors. The campers feel close to the counselors and benefit tremendously from this interaction. RID: 49191
Click to report rating    9/8/15   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter has enjoyed four years of Kupugani and my son looks forward to his second year. For them, Kupugani is a place to reconnect with special camp friends (including wonderful camp director/owner couple, Kevin and Natasha), make interesting new friends from around the globe, and experience a positive, multicultural environment. Kupugani features a full-range of classic camp experiences including pretty scenery with a stream and boating "lake," archery, swimming, canoeing, fishing, arts/crafts, climbing, great camp songs, daily outdoor games, wildlife, stars, night owls and morning birdsong. Kupugani programming is rooted in the crucially important developmental activities of experiential play, diversity, and direct interpersonal interaction. Mealtimes at Kupugani feature balanced, satisfying fare. The camp "cabins" are a bit fancier than those I experienced when I was a child but with similarly simple and rustic bunk-bed arrangement. Kupugani is an excellent c RID: 49157
Click to report rating    8/16/15   5     5     5     5     5   I sent my 11 year old son for the first tine this year, and it was the best decision I could have made. The directors and counselors were amazing. My son came back a different boy. He now knew he could be and do anything he wanted with courage and strenghth. This was something i would try and preach, but never succeeded. My son is much more confident and I'm so glad he enjoyed his time. RID: 49079
Click to report rating    8/11/15   4     4     5     4     5   Objectively speaking, the Poison Ivy is an ongoing issue that needs to be dealt with in some way - the poor kids really do suffer. My daughter (11) didn't get it but she told me of another camper who did. As far as everything else, it was either very good or excellent and I believe the experience will have long lasting positive effects. On a scale of 0-10 with 10 being one of the best experiences of her life, my daughter gave it a 9 and continues to talk about going back next year despite the fact that I haven't decided what our plans are. Send 2+ spray bottles of mosquito spray, long pants for walks in the woods, poison ivy treatment and the go for it! RID: 49053
Click to report rating    8/6/15   5     5     5     5     5   My son attended this camp this summer. It was the first time he had been away from home. We researched camps extensively and drove 7 hours both ways to get bim to Camp Kupagani. When we picked him up he exclaimed. "THIS WAS ONE OF RHE BEST EXPRRIENCES OF MY WHOLE LIFE!" That was the best feeling as a mother to know I had made a great choice and investment in him. I was a little nervous and sad to leave him, especially with no cell phone or contact for 2 weeks. I was very impressed at the individual attention he received. Within 24 hours there were pictures of Quin enjoying himself doing the countless mindful activities at camp. The persoanl development he achieved in just 2 weeks speaks to the great thought this camp has used in creating their program. He has faced many fears, felt independence, gained confidence, and all on his own with out me. Quin wants to return to camp already. If you are looking for something special for your child this is absolutely the place to be. RID: 49012
Click to report rating    8/5/15   5     5     5     5     5   My 11-year-old daughter has now attended Camp Kupugani two times and we both highly recommend it! I had searched and searched for an overnight camp that would not only be fun, but more importantly be inspiring. Camp Kupugani is truly an amazing place with a nurturing staff, a fun yet challenging curriculum, and with two camp directors/owners who treat their campers like they would their own children - with love, compassion and support. My daughter has become more empowered as a young woman and has a better understanding of how she can successfully love her unique self and make a difference in this world. I cannot say enough good things about Camp Kupugani. I guess the best way to explain it is that when I came to pick up my daughter after two weeks of camp this summer, the first thing she said was not "hi" or "missed you mom" but instead, "Can you please sign me up for next year's camp?!"  8/5/15   5     5     5     5     5   This was our daughter's second year at Camp Kupugani. She wants to return! On the way to the camp, she said it was the one thing she’d been looking forward to all year. When I asked why, she said, "because I can be me." I'm surprised at the negative review posted to this site (and this is why I’m posting). It is a camp about “girl power” not a luxury resort. The pool is a large, fenced, outside pool. There is nothing "scary" about it. Bathrooms in a separate building? It's a camp! The cabins are solidly built and appropriate. My daughter raves about the food and she’ll complain if food is not just right. The meals and snacks are nutritious. If a 12yo girl put on such weight, my bet is its due to normal hormonal changes. Watch the videos on the camp’s website under "girls camp" and "staff" to get a feel for it. There are 2 female counselors assigned to each cabin. I have 100% confidence my daughter is safe there. It’s a great value. RID: 49004
Click to report rating    8/5/15   5     5     5     5     5   I sent my daughter to Kupugani for the first time this summer (2015) and it was the best decision! As she is getting older I worry more and more about the influences and negative messages bombarding young ladies in our society. I was looking for a camp that was going to foster her sense of self and help her to feel empowered and confident to be herself. Kupugani was perfect for that. She spent two weeks with girls of different ages and backgrounds and they all got to celebrate each others differences and similarities. In addition, I am especially grateful to Kupugani because without the "campership" I would not have been able to afford to send my daughter to camp. While, I was admittedly nervous to send her for two weeks Kupugani was very reassuring and posting the pictures every day helped put my mind at ease because I could see her having fun. She loved Kupugani and we will definitely be returning next summer! RID: 49003
Click to report rating    8/5/15   5     4     5     5     4   Normally I do not post reviews but after reading one of them I felt compelled to give a true account. YES, I was nervous about sending my daughter to this camp, especially since it is more than an 8 hour drive. However, she truly enjoyed her first time and made so many new and wonderful friends that she is returning next year to do a four week session. While it may be an older summer camp facility, that does not hinder its effectiveness. If you are looking for a brand new camp with shiny walls, high priced decor, and expensive activities like horse riding then be willing to sponsor the camp with a million dollar endowment fund and I am sure Kevin and Natasha would love to rebuild the entire facilities. I loved its older and rustic feel because it gave my daughter a new appreciation for the luxuries extended to her at home. Everyone at the camp was good to my daughter and the counselors impressed me with their enthusiasm to work with our children! RID: 49002
Click to report rating    7/22/15   1     1     4     1     1   This is a lot of money for a really rustic camp. Bathrooms in a separate building, cabins with many bunks squeezed into a small space, scary-looking pool, dangerous-looking lights/ceiling fans in the screened-in rec room. It appears that the kids did fun activities, but the price tag is awfully high for what it was. Also, our daughter gained 20% of her body weight in a month. How much she chose to eat is very much on her, but what kind of food was provided to make it possible? She says almost everything in the fruit/veg department was canned. The worst was a frightening incident involving an adult male possibly having contact with our daughter. The director many times refused to answer our questions, and he wanted to talk directly to our daughter after camp....creepy! We still don't know what really happened. Our daughter says there was nothing, but then why did the director call us in a panic? We suspect that he made the whole thing up since he's not willing to talk about it now. RID: 48915
Click to report rating    7/19/15   3     4     5     1     5   Great ideas for activities but very poor camper care. My 11yr old daughter returned with dozens of mosquito bits, despite having a full can of spray and $100 is the camp store to buy more. The staff does not ensure camper readiness before going into the woods. She was also told to hold her bladder during the night and wet her bed. Then the clothes stayed in her laundry bag for 3 days. A very disappointing 1st time experience. RID: 48897
