Click to report rating    5/11/17   5     5     5     5     5   I am going back this year for my fifth year. It will be 4 weeks with 10 days of sea kayaking in the Apostle Islands. By FAR the best memories of my childhood have come from this camp. 2 years ago, I met another camper named Will. He lives in Jackson Hole, WY and I live in Wisconsin. We got eachothers information and we have become lifelong best friends. We have both visited each other multiple times and we are going to camp together this year! Trail is AMAZING and the food is awesome! Nothing but GREAT from this camp! THe staff is so nice and funny and I don't get homesick anymore, I get campsick! You really grow mentally on trail because it's just you, the woods, and your friends. You get to think so much and it's just amazing. I wish I could go here for the rest of my life and maybe someday become a counselor. Please send your children here! They will LOVE it and want to come back every year! RID: 50713
Click to report rating    6/9/16   5     5     5     5     5   Camp has been the most amazing and influential thing in my life. I'm coming up on my fifth summer there and would never give it up for anything. The trips are to amazing places that I would have never seen before. I think the problem that many of the people reviewing negatively have had is that it is a really hardcore camp. They have long trips that may not be good for people that arn't ready for them. I've felt home sick before and I've wanted to leave at some points but I'm honestly so glad I didn't. There were some moments where I'd feel this way towards the beginning of my experience but as the year went on I began feeling homesick from camp during the school year. I would actually sometimes cry because of it. Those who go there know every word to "Break out the oars", know how hard it is to be woken Up by pots and pans on Paul Bunyan day, and know to leave know trace and how to treat nature. Camp is my second home and I hope it can be a second home to others too. RID: 49659
Click to report rating    10/15/15   3     4     5     5     3   THE GOOD: My child has been to Manito-wish for 6 summers now. Done everything from residential camp to extended backpacking and kayaking trips. The counselors have been uniformly very good, and often terrific, and the camaraderie among the campers quite strong. The facilities are good, and the focus on personal development pronounced and well executed. Now, THE BAD: the camp's administration is weak, and its registration process is downright Medieval. As campers advance, registration becomes much more limited, and registration dates appear without conspicuous notice. The camp uses an on-line registration system that is evidently held together with twine and duct tape. And, WORST OF ALL, advanced campers often find that there is NO SPACE AT ALL FOR THEM in the advanced Outpost and Expeditionary programs. This is unconscionable. WORD TO THE WISE: If I were starting over, I would have selected a different camp. To bring someone along in your program and then exclude them? Not acceptable. RID: 49237
Click to report rating    7/29/15   1     2     2     1     1   Worst camp experience. Daughter got sick, only taken to the nurse once. Was not provided with decongestion or cough medicine. When I picked her up, my first stop was to an urgent care clinic. Staff did not call me about illness. Also, she left camp wearing dirty clothes and a suitcase full of extremely dirty clothes. The laundry service offered by the camp is only offered 2 days after arriving at camp (over a 2 week duration). It takes the camp a full week to get the clothes back from their outside laundry service. As for the counsellors, some good, some bad. Unfortunately for my daughter she got the bad ones. As for activities, they offer their own horse stables. Over 2 weeks, my daughter got to ride twice, for 15 minutes. Otherwise she had to groom the horse, etc. Riding the horses is actually a "limited" activity. The value and experience offered by manitowish is extremely disappointing. I wish they had conveyed the truth before we sent our 11 year old daughter. RID: 48960
Click to report rating    5/1/14   5     5     5     5     5   I attended Camp Manito-wish for 13 summers as a camper and as staff person. There isn't a day that passes that isn't directly tied back to my days at this wonderful place. I am very proud to be sending my 10 year old girl for her first summer session in July. She is already a veteran of Camp Manito-wish having attended Memorial Day work weekends and anniversary events. I can't wait to see her grow as an individual. Fantastic experience for your children. You can also attend family camp in late August! RID: 47261
Click to report rating    11/4/13   5     5     5     5     5   literally the best outdoor camp in the midwest. The staff is wonderful, never have met such outgoing young people before. I think there is one counselor for every five kids with many other adult staff which is reassuring. Overall just an amazing camp! RID: 46232
8/6/13   2     1     1     1     1   HATED this camp!!! If your child gets homesick BEWARE...They do NOT help them and force them to stay! Also trail was a horrible experience for my child and many other kids in her cabin as well. RID: 45529
Click to report rating    5/26/13   5     5     5     5     5   What can I say, it's a fantastic place. A must-go-to for any kid from any environment. Take a look at their leadership program as my kid went there with his school, and now we're looking into sending him there for summer camp. RID: 44573
Click to report rating    7/17/12   5     5     5     5     5   Our 5th grader doesn't do sleep overs and told us he had no plans to ever leave home. After lots and lots of research, this camp is what we chose. The director was impressively attentive in returning phone calls and addressing all of our issues. He gave us great guidance (have him take the bus up, make sure it's two weeks, etc.). We got him last week and this kid has never talked so highly about any experience. Socially, the counselors did such a great job with positive talk and the kids seemed very respectful of each other. The activities were traditional and quirky, and the latter made our son feel like part of a secret team where he succeeded. He cried several times on the way home because it was over. He will definitely be back and we are so grateful for our son to experience such success and independence. The "on trail" experience was the highlight. RID: 41767

Click to report rating    7/25/11   5     4     5     5     4   Camp Manito-wish has been one of the best experiances of my life. After going to another camp for three years I found the staff at Manito-wish caring and prepared, and the campers are amazing. The Outpost Program is amazing and I would reccomend it to any teen. The semi-steep price is one hundred percent worth it. RID: 36514
Click to report rating    7/13/11   1     4     5     5     4   Counselors/guides are not properly trained in camp safety. Guide allowed camp to be set without hanging food a safe distance from tents. During the night a black bear ransacked the food within 10' of a tent. Bear returned the following day with her cubs. Allowing a food source this close to the tents is nothing short of reckless, as parents we expect guides to take reasonable safety precautions. Fortunately, for this group of campers, the bear left after two hours without incident. If the training of the guides is not addressed, a similar encounter could result in serious injury or worse. Due to the inexperience of staff, I can not recommend this camp. RID: 36389
Click to report rating    8/1/10   5     5     5     5     5   I've gone to camp Manito-wish for six years. I started out as a 10 year old, and just went on an out-post trip this summer. It is a fanastic camp! I recommend sending your child to the longest session because it really gives them the opportunity to get to know the other kids and the counselors. Going for multiple years is also really fun because each year, the trail trip becomes more difficult and more interesting. The counselors are so friendly and keep your mind off of being homesick. I'm a very anxious person, but while at camp, I never got nervous. My little brother went this year and loved it aswell! I reccommend it to anyone and everyone! :) RID: 33583
Click to report rating    7/26/10   5     5     5     5     5   Greatest outdoor camp in the midwest. The trail experience is amazing. RID: 33506
Click to report rating    7/19/09   3     3     4     2     4   I went to this camp when I was 14 & 15 years old. I did a kayak trip and a canoe trip. The first year I absolutely loved it and couldn't wait to come back - but the second year was horrible, I couldn't wait to go home. It all depends on the counselors your child gets, they are not all motivated to give personal attention to each camper and some of them show favoritism constantly. I live around Chicago, so it was quite a trip just to get to Manito-wish and unfortunately for my second year, it definitely wasn't worth the travel. I suggest researching the staff or asking other Manito-wish families who they suggest as a counselor for your kid so you don't get stuck with a dud like I did. RID: 30463
Click to report rating    6/29/08   5     5     5     4     5   The Staff were great and I thought it was a good idea for all of the kids to go on trail. The food was really good. The only thing that was bad was that in my cabin there were a bunch of rich snobs from the suburbs of Chicago. RID: 24435
Click to report rating    3/31/08   2     2     2     2     2   this camp is alright, but dosn't have much personality, or spirit. i've also been to minikani, and they have tons more soirt, also people are more outgoing so there's less of the awkward beggining stages. i liked this camp, but LOVED minikani RID: 21799
Click to report rating    2/18/08   5     5     5     5     5   The most amazing experiences i've had in my life. I'm only 16, but this camp has helped shaped my personality and has motivated me to be the best person i can be. The staff is so friendly and i grew to love all my councelars (sp) as sisters. The cost is compleatly worth the experience in the back woods of northern wisconsin. RID: 20386
Click to report rating    4/20/07   5     5     5     5     5   Quetico Canoeing - Great!! My 17-year old son went on a canoing expedition 2 years ago to the Canadian Boundary waters. Camp prep then 3 weeks in the fantastic wilderness. He loved it - leader was great, kids were great and experience was unforgettable. He didn't even know how to paddle before he went! RID: 9889
Click to report rating    4/12/07   5     5     5     5     5   I loved this camp! I wish I would have found out about it when I was younger. I'm going to outpost this year (Manito-Wish wilderness travel) and I'm so excited! RID: 9656
Click to report rating    8/24/06   5     4     5     5     5   This place is awesome!!! So many things to do, the staff is great, trail was one of my favorite things. You get to meet so many new people from all over the U.S. and around the world. This year had some kids from Germany, Spain, and Mexico. The cabins arn't the greatest, but are pretty big. Having separate boys and girls sessions is ok. Food is good. Can't wait to come back again next year!! Go LR 1 2006!!! RID: 2362
