Friendships formed at Akeela — lasting connections for neurodivergent campers

We've seen it over and over, for nearly two decades of running Camp Akeela: the friendships that form here are not ordinary summer friendships. They're the kind built on genuine mutual recognition — I see you, and I'm like you — and those tend to hold. Many of our alumni are still in close contact with their camp friends many years later. Some have gone on to college together. If your child has struggled to form lasting friendships, if they've come home from school feeling lonely or misunderstood more times than you can count, if they've never quite had their people — camp might be where they find them.

What makes Akeela different — belonging for neurodivergent kids

At Camp Akeela, we believe that when neurodivergent kids come together in a traditional camp setting, extraordinary things happen. Our specialized camps for neurodivergent kids create an environment where being different isn't just accepted; it's celebrated. Surrounded by staff members who truly "get" them and other quirky peers, campers discover they belong and can be the best versions of themselves.

Setting — 400 wooded acres on Miller Pond in Vermont

Camp Akeela is set on 400 wooded acres in Strafford, Vermont. The camp's cabins, facilities and program areas are perched on the shores of Miller Pond, a crystal-clear 65 acre lake that the camp shares with just one private home. Akeela's location in the lush Connecticut River Valley on the Vermont – New Hampshire border places it only 25 minutes from the charming college town of Hanover, NH. The camp is 2-1/2 hours from Boston and approximately 4-1/2 hours from the New York Metro area.

Independence, growth & leadership

What overnight camp actually builds — confidence in one's own identity

What a good overnight camp for neurodivergent kids actually builds isn't a checklist of social behaviors. It's something harder to quantify and more important: confidence in one's own identity. When a camper discovers that their intense curiosity is an asset, not an oddity — that other kids find it cool that they know everything about Roman aqueducts or competitive Pokémon — something shifts. When they navigate a conflict with a bunkmate and come out the other side of it with the relationship intact, they carry that forward. Parents who've sent their kids to specialized overnight camps often describe the same phenomenon: their child comes home different. Taller, somehow. More confident. More willing to advocate for themselves.

Food — kid-friendly, healthy, dietary needs accommodated

Our food is both kid-friendly and healthy. Whenever possible, we use all natural products with low sugar content and no preservatives. We are sensitive to our campers' dietary differences and will do our best to accommodate the needs of each child. There will always be choices at meals so that campers can learn to try new things while also knowing that they can always find something they like to eat.
