Clues to fit

Belonging and inclusion — all boys welcome regardless of background

Camp Belknap welcomes all boys, regardless of economic status, country of origin, ethnicity, race, religion, social group, or sexual orientation. We foster inclusivity, compassion, and selflessness and envision a camp where all identities, differences, and experiences are valued. Boys from all walks of life are welcomed into the family and encouraged to explore their gifts and passions, guided on their path by mentors young and old who are committed to their care.

Cabinmate requests — not accepted, to encourage new friendships

We do NOT accept cabin mate requests, as we separate siblings and friends among cabins in order to be fair to all campers, to avoid cliques, and to give all campers an opportunity to make new friends. However, our daily schedule, which is based on camper choice, permits campers to participate in activities with their friends.

Cabin life — 10 boys, leaders, living together

From age 8-16, boys return each summer to live together in a cabin with 9 other boys and their leader(s). The essence of the Belknap experience is to unplug, be surrounded and impacted by positive young male role models, and engage in a natural setting. Camp Belknap anchors boys in the present while still providing an environment for personal and moral growth for the future.

What Camp Belknap is — founding, setting, mission

Camp Belknap is a non-profit traditional overnight summer camp for boys age 8-16 located in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire. Established in 1903, Camp Belknap today flourishes on the shore of New Hampshire's majestic Lake Winnipesaukee, not only because the concept of summer camp remains evergreen, but because its founders and succeeding generations of directors and leaders have created and continually improved on something special – a felicitous blend of place, tradition, and purpose. The aim, from early on, has been to ground boys in the present, while preparing them for the future.

Traditions & shared moments

Parent communication — mail boat tradition, no unscheduled visits

Please use mail to keep in touch with your camper while he is under the pines at Camp Belknap. Letters and postcards come via mail boat, which is a long-standing tradition at camp. We kindly request that visitation is kept to check-in and out days. We have found that unscheduled visits and a camper coming to the phone can disrupt activity time and can lead to additional homesickness. In line with our technology policy we do not deliver emails or faxes to campers.

Traditions — songs, naming of leaders, collective memory

The multifarious traditions of Belknap keep the mission alive across the generations. From small moments such as the singing of a favorite Camp song to larger ones like the naming of a new corps of leaders from within the camper ranks, the traditions of Camp Belknap maintain its collective memory for Belknappers past and present to enjoy.

Independence, growth & leadership

Leadership By Example — guiding principle of Belknap leaders

Leadership By Example (LBE) is the guiding principle of Belknap Leadership; a principle based on the belief that the most effective guidance for our campers and ourselves is a sterling example. Our Divisional and Cabin Leaders have all attended Belknap as campers. Belknap leaders prioritize spending time with campers, knowing that nothing is more formative to boys' development than their relationships with healthy role models.

Parent testimonial — independence, friendships, safe community (Goins)

As parents, we see each Belknap summer as an opportunity for our boys to advance their independence and develop their self-confidence in new and different ways. We appreciate the interests sparked by their time under the pines (tennis!), new foods they enjoyed (peirogies!), and friendships made and rekindled in this special place away from the intrusions of technology. We leave comfortable that they will be in a safe and supportive community in the coming weeks. And, we see their joyful smiles at pick-up, listen to the raucous cheers from their division leaders as they depart, and know these Belknap memories will last a lifetime. — Melanie & Jason Goins

Programs & camp life

Cabin duties and morning routine — values through daily work

Belknap is a values driven camp where boys rise each morning to do their share of the work through cabin inspection and camp duties and go to bed each night to the sound of the live bugle.

Choice programming — campers choose their own activities

Camp Belknap offers choice programming, which means during the daily schedule campers have three program periods to choose what activity to join. Campers pick from a list of at least seven program options. Most program periods do not require that the camper sign up in advance. A handful of activity options require campers to sign up due to limited spots/equipment, such as sailing, archery or the climbing tower. There are multiple opportunities to participate in all camp activities during a 2-week session.
