About Camp Cobbossee

Activity choice — Cobbachoice and grade-based scheduling

If you are currently in fourth grade or below, you will get a schedule from us every three days so you can try a little of everything. Each day for two periods, everyone chooses activities from a variety of categories — it's called 'Cobbachoice.' If you are in 5th or 6th grade, the first three days we give you an 'observation schedule' and then after that, you can customize as much as you like! If you are in seventh grade or higher, you choose everything!

Clues to fit

Brotherhood — everyone belongs, no one is left out

Cobbossee's brotherhood means that everyone is welcome. Everyone belongs. Everyone has a role to play. Our boys form bonds with each other and with their counselors that last decades, lifetimes. Just like how in a real family, your brother is always your brother no matter what. Same here.

Head of Adventure — Jake Cleary's 'Challenge by Choice' philosophy and safety focus

Jake trains and leads our wide-ranging trips and adventure program. His deep experience in climbing, archery, trips administration, and mountain biking, as well as his fierce dedication to safety, put our campers in good stead as they experience the 'Challenge by Choice' philosophy. Jake loves the transformation that he sees daily on the wall, on the bikes, and on the trips. He and his staff find joy in each of those small triumphs, knowing that they mean huge changes for the boys.

Maine trips — age-specific adventure from Spirit Island to Kennebec whitewater

Our youngest boys (2nd–4th) camp close to home on our lovely private island. They learn to make camp, put up tents, and to safely tend a fire. Our next age group (5th–6th) takes these skills up to Coos Canyon where they camp-cook, ledge-jump, search for crawfish, and swim in the deep river. Our oldest campers (7th–9th) test their mettle on the mighty Kennebec River as they white-water raft!

Traditions & shared moments

Color War — the culminating tradition at Cobbossee

It is the culmination of everything that is Cobbossee. Intense competition and deep traditions all combine in Color War. For four mind-blowing days everything at Cobbossee becomes a competition. Soccer, basketball, tennis, baseball, football, lacrosse, and all the rest, of course. But also bunk cleanup, fishing, swimming, running. You will try hard. You will remain graceful in victory and defeat. You will never forget Color War.

Watermelon League — intramural tradition of sportsmanship across ages

Decades ago, a Cobbossee tradition was born. Intramural teams of Cobbossee boys played each other for only the love of the game and a slice of watermelon after the contest. Now Watermelon League is a contest that lasts all session, with younger boys being coached by our oldest. Our coaches referee the contests and rankings are kept! Each match is governed by our Cobbossee value of sportsmanship.

Independence, growth & leadership

Resilience — bunk life isn't always easy, and that's the point

Bunk life is awesome, but it's not always easy. It's not meant to be. Overnight camps like Cobbossee provide a supportive space for campers to face setbacks, regroup, and try again, all with the firm and kind guidance of great counselors. This experience nurtures resilience and perseverance — qualities that help students approach real-world challenges with confidence and grit.
