About Camp Juliette Low

Cabin/sleeping arrangements — platform tents with unit facilities

CJL is all about the outdoors. Our campers live in four-person platform tents grouped by age into units of about 28 girls. Four staff members live in their own tent in the center of each unit. Each unit has its own shower and toilet facility, as well as a sheltered fire area and a "unit kitchen" for cook-outs.

Clues to fit

Community belonging — meals served family-style, campers clean up together

Before breakfast, as before each meal, a group of campers and staff assemble at the dining hall to prepare the tables for the meal, which, as with all CJL meals, is served family-style. These girls are the waitresses for that meal, responsible for shuttling food back and forth. After the meal, the remaining campers and counselors work together to clean the dishes at their table.

First-timer anxiety — preparing your daughter for camp

The more children know about Camp Juliette Low, the more secure they feel. Attending a Parent-Daughter Weekend (held the first weekend in May every year), seeing pictures of CJL, or seeing a camp video helps her begin to become familiar with the camp surroundings. We suggest that younger and first-time campers attend a 1-week session or mini camp. Once a camper is familiar with camp, she is usually ready for more excitement!

Setting — 330 acres on Lookout Mountain, Georgia

Camp Juliette Low is located on Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia — one of the most beautiful areas in the southeast. The camp property encompasses more than 330 acres of mountaintop forestland, and nearly a mile of the middle fork of the Little River. The original 10 acres of the camp, founded in 1922, include historic landmarks such as the Juliette Low Lodge, the bell and pump house, the soft rocks, Sunday School Rock, the swinging bridge, and the swimming hole.

Setting — what to expect from outdoor tent life at CJL

Campers live in open platform tents without electricity and access to internet. Bugs and other wildlife can be spotted from their living quarters. Campers must be able to walk/hike through camp, as there are no paved sidewalks. Getting to experience nature and live within the great outdoors is one of the best parts about being at CJL.

Traditions & shared moments

Special activities and traditions — cookouts, All Camp Day, overnights

Once a week, the campers prepare their own evening meals over fires in their units. During two-week sessions, everyone picks up their sleeping bags and treks out with their unit into the woods for a camp-out under the stars. At the end of each session, a friendly competition is held among the various units. This contest, called "All Camp Day," includes demonstrations of campcraft skills (such as fire building, water boiling, and wood chopping), athletic skills (canoe racing, swimming), and group singing. The session wraps up with a big tasty banquet, awards show, and final campfire ... and a lot of talk about returning next summer!

Independence, growth & leadership

CIT program — leadership training rooted in CJL's founding purpose

The CIT program at Camp Juliette Low encompasses everything for which Juliette Low founded the camp: outdoor leadership training. The program is intended to provide girls with the skills necessary to one day serve as counselors and program leaders. The responsibility and leadership skills acquired in the CIT program are qualities that serve girls throughout their lifetime. "The CIT program taught me to depend on ME."

CJL mission — confidence and competence for girls

In the tradition of the camp's founder, Juliette Gordon Low, who also founded the Girl Scouts, CJL has a simple goal: to provide girls with opportunities to become more competent and more confident with themselves, the outdoors, and life in general. CJL staff and campers also have a lot of fun in the process.

Programs & camp life

Daily life — a typical day at CJL

When you live in a big, four-person platform tent, as CJL campers and staff do, morning comes shortly after daybreak, as the multitude of birds will tell you. There are three class periods during the morning. Girls choose from a wide variety of activities including archery, canoeing, sailing, swimming, diving, crafts, hiking, outdoor living skills (OLS), court sports, and horseback riding. The afternoon begins after lunch with a rest hour, when campers and staff can rejuvenate. During this time, the campers read and write letters, take short naps, or work on quiet projects in the unit. The long summer days allow for evening activities after dinner, such as camp fires, folk dancing, huge hide-and-seek games, and storytelling.
