About Camp Matoaka

Accommodating food allergies and restrictions

Our Kitchen Staff, led by our Kitchen Manager of 30+ years, are very attentive to the needs of our campers and will help your child with most mealtime concerns. We're able to accommodate most food allergies or restrictions, such as gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, soy-free, dairy-free, etc. Camp Matoaka partners with a Food Allergy Coach, who has a nutrition and dietary-background, to help manage and oversee all of the campers with food allergies and restrictions. She works closely with Leslie and the Health Center team to be sure all campers are making safe choices throughout their time at camp.

Ropes Course — Project Adventure-designed, certified staff

Our Challenge Course, designed and built by Project Adventure, is designed to develop group initiatives, cognitive and physical problem solving, personal achievement and self-confidence. Supervised by certified outdoor adventure lovers, where safety is their top priority, campers are challenged to discover qualities in themselves they may not have known they have. The entire Ropes Course undergoes a rigorous inspection annually and our instructors complete annual instructor safety training.

Traditions & shared moments

Founded 1951 — four generations of tradition, built from a sheep farm

Since 1951, Matoaka has become an extraordinary place where girls flourish and mature, and where friendships last a lifetime. The founding family took a sheep farm, made it One Great Place, and created 'the feeling' that never leaves you. Our traditions stretch back four generations, making going to Matoaka a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

Kilk and Mookies — milk and cookies tradition since 1951

We also have milk and cookies (aka Kilk and Mookies) after evening activity most nights — a Matoaka tradition since 1951! Our kitchen bakes 20,000 homemade cookies each summer.

Programs & camp life

Facilities — heated pool, 450-seat theater, 9 tennis courts

We are one of the few camps in Maine with a heated swimming pool and 450-seat theater for evening activities. Matoaka sits on over a mile and a half of waterfront footage. Our facilities are constantly being updated. On 9 regulation tennis courts, 4 of which are lit for night play, campers are taught basic to advanced competitive techniques.

Health Center facilities — exam rooms, isolation rooms, strep screening

The air-conditioned health center is a comfortable place where campers receive professional medical care and treatment and can take a respite from normal camp life when deemed necessary. There are two private, spacious exam rooms, isolation rooms, semi-private rooms, and a group room. Our facilities enable us to perform strep screening, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis and much more! When it is necessary to seek care off-campus, the Mid Maine Medical Hospital is located just nine miles from camp and we are covered on the 911 system.
