During summer camp, campers have the freedom to choose from a wide variety of activities to participate in each day. Campers can participate in activities recreationally, or work towards earning a badge to grow their skills at that activity. Our qualified staff supervise and provide instruction for all activities while acting as role models to teach campers important life skills. With only 100 campers each session, new campers quickly find a place in the tight-knit community.
New Camper Orientation — virtual event and video series for first-timers
We will be hosting a virtual event in April 2027 for all New Camper families! Our Directors will walk through everything you need to know before camp begins. During this session we'll cover a typical day at camp, packing lists, what camper drop-off and pick-up looks like and what you can expect when your child is at camp! In addition to our virtual event, we will send out links to our New Camper Orientation Series. Each video will concentrate on a specific topic such as how to complete forms, transportation information, camper healthcare and how to prepare for your first overnight camp experience.
Birch Island — private island location and setting
Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da is located on Birch Island, our 23-acre private property on Lake Wah Wash Kesh, 40 minutes north of Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. Being water-access only, all visitors to the island are picked up by boat at Lamoureux Landing. The island is covered by pine trees, granite rock shoreline and natural sand beaches. The property is exclusively used by Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da and is a quiet and safe location, free from any motor vehicle traffic. The surrounding Crown Land ensures that our end of the lake is left natural and undeveloped.
Parent voice — island setting and leadership development
After testing a couple other girls camps with our first daughter we found Miakonda to be everything we wanted in a camp. There is something special about an island camp, where everyone learns to live together and your leaders/counselors are around and can't just 'go into town' easily on their time off. We've had all three of our daughters attend the camp, with two so far moving on to the staff. I would strongly recommend Miakonda to anyone interested in developing your daughter into a strong, independent leader for the future.
Mi-A-Kon-Da has an outstanding reputation for its canoeing skills program. With over 20 cedar strip canoes, over 100 ash paddles of various sizes, and a magnificent 15-foot cedar strip canoe, Mi-A-Kon-Da provides campers of all ages with the opportunity to discover canoeing — an integral part of our camp life and traditions.
Alumni voice — confidence, firsts, and lifelong friendships on Birch Island
My time at Mi-a-kon-da has shaped and changed me more than I can ever truly put into words. This is the place where I developed the confidence to believe in myself, played my first song on guitar, completed my first eskimo roll. This is the place where I heard loons call cross the water, floated candles, listened to wind in trees, felt the Canadian Shield. This is the place where I made friendships that transcend summers and distance, felt at home, became who I am. This is the place where I grew up. I am enormously thankful to have found a home at Mi-a-kon-da; those of us lucky enough to have spent summers on Birch Island are never the same.
She regaled me with stories of rock climbing, sailing, swimming, eating cupcakes, eating lots of good food. She has come back braver, stronger, more resilient, and more willing to get dirty rather than focus on the superficiality that society dictates women follow. As a passionate believer of being outdoors and of women's rights, we are so thrilled with her experiences.
LIMITED SPACE. End date listed as 'July 5' on dates-fees page but preparing-for-camp page shows Session 2b ends July 15 — operator should confirm. All prices in Canadian Dollars + 13% HST.
