Community and belonging — living together builds lifelong friendships

Central to the camp experience is learning how to live together as a member of a group. Children of all ages mature through community awareness, because only in a group do we learn tolerance, compromise and acceptance, the skills integral to achieving personal growth. In camp, we live together day in, day out. This immersion cultivates in children the ability to know one another, to share our varied strengths, to offer encouragement, lend support, and gain the experience of living—and taking pride in living—in a group. The strength of the Modin community yields unprecedented opportunities for the establishment of lifelong friendships.

Program breadth — 70+ activities, morning bunk periods plus afternoon electives

Campers receive intensive instruction in a wide variety of athletics, water sports, creative and performing arts and wilderness adventure programs. Weekday mornings, children participate in bunk activities; afternoons find them engaged in electives; each day they choose three electives from a pool of over 50 choices. Our goal is to ensure that each camper's schedule comprises a well-balanced selection of activities to ensure personal growth and skill development. At Modin, there is no pressure to choose only those activities with which a child is familiar or proficient in.

Cabin life — modern cabins with private bathrooms, twin beds

All cabins at Modin are spacious and modern. The average building is only a few years old and all facilities are well maintained. Cabins feature showers, toilets and sinks with hot & cold water. All beds are modern, twin size wooden structures and the mattresses fit twin-size sheets. On average, there are two bunks per age with twelve children and four counselors.

Traditions & shared moments

Shabbat at Modin — weekly community tradition on Salmon Lake Bima

Friday afternoon is a particularly moving time at camp when our community comes together to welcome Shabbat through song and prayer. Each week a different group of campers assists our Judaic director in leading services on our beautiful Bima overlooking majestic Salmon Lake. After services our community comes together in our expansive recreation center to enjoy a Shabbat meal full of food, friendship and freshly baked challahs. Saturday morning Shabbat services include both a traditional Torah service as well as a camp-wide discussion related to the parsha of the week or an appropriately themed topic such as Israel or social justice. We conclude the day with a beautiful and moving Havdalah service. Shabbat at Modin is truly magical.

Independence, growth & leadership

Parent testimonial — emotional growth, confidence, bonds with counselors

"Modin has become a 'home away from home' for our son. His emotional growth and development is evident to us. His confidence and sense of himself have been nurtured at Modin and have provided him wonderful new growth opportunities. He cherishes the many different bonds he has been able to forge with his counselors and bunkmates. As parents, we are deeply grateful." – Warren & Debbie, Boston, MA

Modin's philosophy — tailoring the program to the individual child

At Modin, we encourage our campers to make choices, take risks and accept new challenges. Often it is wise to let children establish their strengths first in something they already know and feel comfortable doing. With guidance and nurturing, our children are then encouraged to try new things. Every moment at Camp is a learning situation: we know that as children learn to swim, to climb, to perform, they also learn to persevere—to accept guidance, to make choices, and, in so doing, discover what makes them unique. This is the heart of individual growth.
