Clues to fit

Community & belonging — multi-generational alumni memory

Camp Nominingue isn't just any camp: to those of us who attended and returned to Nominingue year after year, it is the only camp. Once you've been, you're part of a family and tradition that you want to return to as often as possible. The memories of the good times you've had, the friends you've made, the skills you've picked up, these never leave you. Now, as a parent who gets to bring his son to Nominingue, I still get excited every time we drive up. — Michael MacNaughton, Genval, Belgium

Community & belonging — tent group placement philosophy

Camp Nominingue places a great deal of emphasis on tent placements: mixing new and old campers from different locales and teaching them the importance of living together as a close unified group. The camp experience is compromised if a tent consists exclusively of previous friendships. You may list two tent mate preferences and we ask for your cooperation and faith in our ability to make the best possible tent assignment on your camper's behalf.

Setting & environment — 400-acre property on Petit Lac Nominingue

Clean Laurentian water laps at the sandy beach. Towering white birches stand sentinel. Loon calls echo through the star-filled night. Nestled on the shore of Petit Lac Nominingue, far from the reach of urban sprawl, our 400+ acre property is fronted by a sandy beach, making our waterfront an ideal spot for swimming, sailing or paddling. Our tentline winds its way through a grove of white birch trees, where the sound of a tetherball game is muffled only by the laughter from a nearby tent-group.

Traditions & shared moments

Dining experience — historic dining hall and meal traditions

Our historic dining hall, built in 1930, is filled with nearly a century's worth of Camp Nominingue traditions. Canoes hanging from the rafters, leader award plaques, photos of our founder F.M. Van Wagner, and early camp mementos offer a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Campers dine with their tent mates and counselors at large tables. Menus are adjusted each off-season based on feedback and the guidance of a licensed dietician. We maintain a nut and peanut-free environment and offer a vegetarian menu. Our kitchen staff adeptly handles a wide array of food allergies and intolerances. Lunch and supper end with spirited cheers from each camp section.

Independence, growth & leadership

Independence & personal growth — why camp beats a family cottage

At Nominingue, we believe strongly that self-esteem and confidence grow as boys learn new skills and develop skills that have been learned previously. In addition to choosing their instructions, campers choose whether to go on a canoe trip. Twice a day, at morning and afternoon free swims, campers will have a choice as to how they spend their free time: swimming, sailing, playing tennis, working on a project at the craftshop, playing a quiet game of chess in the tent line, a competitive game of tether ball or simply reading a good book. Life at Nominingue is unique in that it is a 24-hour-a-day program planned specifically for boys.

Lasting impact — parent testimonial on self-confidence

We want to thank you and your staff for another fabulous summer at camp for our son. He came back beaming, happy, enthusiastic, with more self-confidence and kindness! He is already looking forward to next year. — Marie Carmen B., Ottawa, ON
