Camp Sequoia is divided up into age groups called 'Divisions.' For our boys program: the Freshman division (ages 8-9), Juniors (ages 10-11), Inters (ages 12-13), Centers (ages 13-14), Seniors (age 14), Elites (age 15), and the LITs (Leaders-in-Training, ages 16-18). Campers live with and participate in all activities with their division.
Due to their fear of stepping outside of their comfort zone, lack of self-confidence, overdependence on their parents, or unsuccessful experiences at prior overnight camps, some of our campers are initially resistant to the idea of attending Camp Sequoia. This is a normal response which quickly diminishes once campers realize they are in a safe environment supervised by caring staff who appreciate them and are surrounded by others who share similar profiles.
Parent testimonial — durable friendships, end-of-session report, going back for six weeks (Erin)
He loved everything about Sequoia. He forged durable friendships with kids he continues to stay in contact with. The staff is spectacular: empathetic, patient and genuinely invested in the success of every camper. We were particularly impressed with the report we received at the end of the session, which astutely identified some of our son's social challenges and had concrete suggestions for helping him overcome them. But most importantly, Sequoia is a fun place. The programming is terrific, with offerings that spoke to our child's interests, executed with energy and creativity. He's going back next summer for six weeks, which is something we never thought he would enthusiastically enlist to do at any camp.
Our family loves the weekend adventures. They are great for our son. Brian and his team always have great destinations and know how to relate to kids in a way that they appreciate.
Setting and environment — boys campus (Perkiomen School)
Camp Sequoia is very fortunate to call the Perkiomen School campus our summer home for our Boys Program. The beautiful grounds of the campus offer a wide array of playing fields and outdoor athletic facilities such as tennis and basketball courts. An indoor, competition-size swimming pool, multiple full-sized gyms and top-notch art facilities with skylights are just a few of the indoor highlights. Outside campers enjoy opportunities for fishing on an 800-acre lake, camping, boating and wilderness skills under the guidance of staff members who are Eagle Scouts.
Why a traditional camp won't work — the social cognition argument
Children who struggle with social cognition (how to think in a social context and apply socially related skills) are not able to improve their social skills by simply being around peers with better social skills. As such, improving social cognition in the camp setting involves a teaching process. We utilize a multi-faceted approach to engage campers so they will have fun and are receptive to the social learning experience, teach campers to develop their social cognition skills through using the best available research-based educational methods, focus on the foundational skills that are lacking in children with social learning needs, and create a space where campers know they are emotionally and physically safe and in a non-punitive, accepting environment.
Alumni camper quote — learned to live independently, made strong friendships (Justin)
I learned how to independently live at Camp Sequoia, and I would not be able to live at college if I hadn't come. I made some strong friendships there, and I learned a lot about interacting with people.
At Camp Sequoia, we host a Camper Council, where two campers from each age group are elected to participate in a weekly meeting with our Director. This gives our campers a chance to voice program ideas, encourage open dialogue, ask questions, and collaborate as a group. This also gives our camper council members a chance to develop their leadership skills and practice public speaking in a supportive setting.

Bad weather — indoor facilities mean no disrupted schedules
Bad weather is no problem at Camp Sequoia thanks to our facilities. This is a great asset to our campers who have trouble with change in schedules. Our campers enjoy the comforts our campus provides as well as inquiry-based opportunities to connect with nature.
Campers at Camp Sequoia enjoy semi-private, climate-controlled rooms. Staff members (2:5 staffing ratio) live across the hall or next door to our campers and all campers in each age group (division) have a dedicated social lounge. Campers will enjoy the comfort of their semi-private bedrooms which feature a bed, bureau, desk, closet, and safe for each student. Window blinds are in all rooms, and beds are twin size with extra-long bedding if needed. This supervision, along with our dedicated overnight staff, ensures that campers always have someone to speak with in case of any overnight concerns or needs.
