Inclusion and belonging — Promise of Inclusion
Camp Sewataro is committed to creating a community of belonging where everyone feels both welcome and invited. We are continuously striving to build a culture that is safe, equitable, and free from discrimination. We commit to recognizing and celebrating our differences and will work to increase the diversity of our camp community. We will create spaces for open dialogue, amplify all voices, and listen with the intent to learn.
Activity breadth — full list including Adventure Kingdom, horseback riding, music studio
Campers spend their days at a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, swimming, archery, adventure challenge (ropes course, climbing wall, and zip line), arts and crafts, music, gardening, drama, team sports, individual sports, and more! Sewataro also offers a horseback riding program operated by Brittany DeGiacomo of Maple Grove Farm on site at camp, with English hunt seat riding lessons at a 1:1 ratio of staff to rider.
Camp Sewataro operates on a unique and beautiful Sudbury-owned property, offering rolling meadows, ponds and pine groves rarely found in suburban neighborhoods. The heart of the property are its two ponds. The 3/4 acre swimming pond is gunnite lined with a sand bottom and beach. Beyond the swim pond is the 3 acre fishing and boating pond. The property also has 4 heated training pools. The Sewataro Challenge Course includes a ropes course with 16 high and low elements, a zip line, a climbing wall and the Fox Adventure Kingdom.
Closing Exercises — daily whole-camp tradition with skits, Green Gizmo, sing-along
Closing Exercises take place at the end of every camp day and provide some of Sewataro's greatest traditions. Each day the entire camp gathers and eagerly awaits the performances that everyone will see. This period provides a chance for groups to present skits or songs they have been hard at work on. After performances comes the Green Gizmo presentation, one of the favorite camp traditions that provides entertainment to the camp all summer long through the silly tasks given to various counselors. Following this, the camp comes together in a camp-wide sing-a-long as campers and staff participate in performing popular camp songs through song and dance.
Friday Special Events — weekly themed all-camp afternoon tradition
One of the favorite traditions that Sewataro has to offer, our Friday Special Events are some of the most highly anticipated activities of the summer. On each Friday of the camp season, the entire afternoon is dedicated to engaging campers in these creative and exciting events. Each week, there is a unique theme that unites the various activities of the event, often culminating in a counselor performance to entertain campers and counselors alike.
Parent quote — so much in one day, boating, fishing, gardening, confidence
There is nowhere else they could do SO much in one day! Boating, fishing, music studio, gardening, sports…and they've gained so much confidence in all their abilities!
Parent quote — two weeks of growth and confidence, ready for kindergarten
In just 2 weeks my kids grew and matured. It was exciting to see. I feel after their camp experience, the transition to kindergarten will be much easier. Their experience here challenged them and helped them to grow in confidence and self-esteem. And amazingly, they play better together and need less parental attention/supervision since attending camp.
We promote a 'challenge by choice' philosophy and campers are taught how to encourage and build each other up no matter the outcome. Staff members role model by participating in each activity, even when it may not be their strength. Equal respect is given to every type of activity – the arts, sports, adventure challenges, etc, so that every child has the opportunity to participate in their favorites and to learn and grow in new areas.
Hot days protocol — sprinklers, shade, water breaks, modified activities
We take every precaution to keep your children cool and comfortable during heat waves. Campers will continue to swim two times a day. We also have sprinklers and misting areas set up all around the camp. Counselors will ensure that their campers are taking frequent water breaks, and the general tone and pace of activities will be lowered to account for the heat. During the heat, counselors will move all physical activities to shaded areas early in the day. We are lucky to have such beautiful, shady pine groves and tree lined meadows to provide relief from the heat.
Insect and tick control — property sprayed, garlic repellent, daily tick checks
Due to the growing number of diseases related to ticks and mosquitoes, Sewataro has implemented an Insect Control plan. The property is sprayed two times a year, once in the spring and once in the fall – the two hatching periods for ticks, with bifenthrin. We also use a garlic spray twice a summer to repel mosquitoes. We encourage you to apply an insect repellent before each camp day. We are happy to reapply repellent after swimming if you send in a bottle labeled for your child.
