Clues to fit

Setting — South Tea Lake and Algonquin Park

Camp Tamakwa is nestled along the winding shoreline of South Tea Lake, just minutes from Algonquin Park's West Gate in Ontario. Accessible only by water, Tamakwa's long lakefront and sloping forested hills offer the true essence of living in the northern woods. Algonquin Park is Canada's oldest provincial park and one of its national treasures, consisting of 3,000 square miles of pristine lakes with over 2,100 km of canoe routes — all in Tamakwa's own backyard.

Traditions & shared moments

Jewish traditions — Shabbat, HaMotzi, Tzedakah

Before each meal, we take a moment together to say thanks — singing the HaMotzi blessing in Hebrew and English. We practice self-reflection and an appreciation for our surroundings at Friday night Shabbat services, which include prayers, the lighting of the candles and a traditional Shabbat meal including homemade Challah bread. After dinner, we gather together to sing, share stories and read the 23rd Psalm, a tradition that dates back to the beginning of Tamakwa's history.

Programs & camp life

CIT program — bridge between camper and staff

Tamakwa's CIT program marks a pivotal step towards becoming a counsellor. It's a transitional phase, infusing added responsibilities while still enjoying camp activities, canoe trips, and living in a camper cabin with friends. Here, campers experience accountability in a secure, growth-focused space. This is their opportunity to gain essential life skills in a safe and secure environment — all while having the summer of their lives. The CIT program is designed to empower, offering not just responsibilities, but a chance to learn, lead, and thrive.

Daily schedule — a typical day at Tamakwa

A typical Tamakwa day begins with the 8:00am wake-up bell and breakfast at 8:30, followed by flag raising and anthem singing at 9:00. Five activity periods run through the day, with Tootsie Frootsie — the fruit break that 'everybody gets' — at 3:25pm and a camp-wide welcome for returning canoe trips. General swim and free play begin at 5:15, dinner at 6:15, flag lowering and tuck at 6:45, and evening programs from 7:45 to 9:00, ending with cabin campfires and a camper snack. Lights out for JTs is 9:30pm.
