Clues to fit

Community & belonging — what makes CWW special

Kids can feel that they're part of something special at Camp Walt Whitman. We feel fortunate to attract particularly nice kids and down-to-earth families. We attribute this to the fact that we share a common goal to raise great kids who value community, giving back to others, being a good person and being a good friend.

First-timers — Big Brother/Sister program

In early June, you will get a call from your Big Sister or Big Brother, a 13-year-old Walt Whitman camper who will answer any questions you might still have and tell you about all the fun you're going to have this summer. When you arrive at camp, your Big Sister or Brother will come to your cabin the very first day to meet you. For the rest of the summer, your Big Brother or Sister will be there for you to talk to, to introduce you to older campers and to hang out with.

Daily schedule — scheduled activities, electives, and SIGs

Campers have three scheduled activity periods with their cabin, two elective periods, and free swim each day. The 9:00 elective is selected weekly — called a Special Interest Group (SIG) — and includes offerings not found in the usual daily schedule, including cooking, photography, technology, model rocketry and Legos. The 4:00 elective is selected daily and allows campers to return to any regularly scheduled activity or choose among special offerings available that day.

Adventure — older camper expeditions to Acadia, Montreal

Our older campers have the opportunity to participate in three- and five-day backpacking adventures, biking trips and canoeing expeditions. Weeklong trips to the Maine seacoast and Acadia National Park, Montreal and Quebec City are also part of their adventurous summer at Camp Walt Whitman.

Adventure program — climbing wall, Aerial Adventure, Kennebec River, backpacking

Within our awe-inspiring setting, campers get a true break from their online lives and develop an affinity and sense of responsibility for the majestic forests and historic White Mountains surrounding our 300-acre campus. Whether attempting the 45-foot-high climbing wall, exploring the brand-new Aerial Adventure Course, working together on the Low or High Ropes Courses, pitching a tent on an overnight camping trip, challenging the whitewater rapids of the Kennebec River or exploring mountain trails, campers learn to set goals for themselves with the help of our certified professional staff.

Traditions & shared moments

Cabin singing traditions — community songbook

Whether they are sitting around the glow of a campfire or gathered together in our wooded amphitheater, our campers and staff love to belt out their favorite summer camp songs, some of which we have been singing for decades. When all of our campers know the same summer camping songs, they feel connected to each other and know they are a part of something bigger than themselves.

Independence, growth & leadership

Staff — senior leadership team continuity

At Camp Walt Whitman we are particularly fortunate to have a large leadership team composed of adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s who are teachers and professors who return to camp summer after summer. The continuity of our experienced leadership staff — six of whom have been at the camp for over 30 summers — ensures that CWW can achieve the highest levels of quality every summer.
