Electives (chuggim) — camper choice, depth, and discovery
On the first day of camp, campers get to decide how they want to spend their mornings from a list of electives we provide. Campers begin the session with three of their picks and have the opportunity to switch to new electives each week. The electives empower kids to steer their own summer and to focus on what they love most about camp. It's a beautiful thing when campers use chuggim to fall deeper in love with their passions. Likewise, it's amazing to watch kids take a chance, sometimes even discovering a talent and enthusiasm they never knew.
Get ready for CYJ's all-out color war — Maccabiah! A thrilling celebration of challenge and competition, Maccabiah is always one of our most memorable programs of the season. Campers of all ages are divided into four teams, spending their day contending for the gold in trials of every kind — on game tables and sports fields, in trivia and dexterity, in our Judaean Relay, our singing and dancing — even meals factor into this sensational CYJ tournament!
Here's a breakdown of a typical day at sleepaway camp, Sunday–Thursday: 7:00 AM wake-up; 7:30 AM flag raising with Israeli Scouts; 7:45 AM breakfast; 8:30 AM t'fillot (prayers) in age groups; 9:15 AM morning chuggim (3 electives of camper's choosing); 12:15 PM bunk cleaning; 1:00 PM lunch; 1:45 PM menucha (rest time); 3:00 PM afternoon activities with aidah, including one hour daily at pool or lake; 5:30 PM chofesh (free time); 6:45 PM flag lowering; 7:00 PM dinner; 8:00 PM evening activities; 8:45 PM bunk time, Shema, lights out.
Israel programming — Israeli staff, Gaga, Rikud, Israel Day, Caravan Show
A large delegation of staff come from Israel every summer. We love that our campers can make personal contacts with Israelis, and many of them in later years manage to meet up again in Israel. From the dodgeball-like Israeli game of Gaga, to our Israeli dances, to Israeli songs, day to day life at CYJ is saturated with cultural experiences from the Holy Land. Every summer, CYJ is visited by a delegation of Israeli scouts — our Scout Caravan — who travel across America to sing, dance, and teach about their lives in Israel. Rikud is taught to every aidah a few times a week and culminates in our All-Camp Rikud right after Havdallah every Saturday night.
