Camper story — belonging and identity at GBC

Give an opening to a camper of any age and instantly you get a camp story. Remember the camper who said, "I love it here at camp!" When asked why, she said: "At home I don't have a lot of friends and I don't do much, but at camp it's different. At camp, I think I might be cool."

Camper voice — camp teaches life skills and friendship merging

I know that camp is a place where I always feel happy and surrounded by people that I think of as family. Camp teaches you amazing life skills such as overcoming challenges. I wouldn't be the same person without GBC. — Amy Seglins

Setting — 730 acres on Lake Bernard near Algonquin Park

Glen Bernard is situated on 730 acres on the east side of Lake Bernard, near the village of Sundridge, Ontario (approximately three hours drive north of Toronto). Lake Bernard is a land locked lake about 3 km wide and 7 km long with shallow margins, making it a great place for a camp. The sandy beach shoreline is ideal to accommodate all waterfront activities. The property includes open spaces for landsports activities, extensive trails through wooded areas for hiking and mountain biking, and elevations providing spectacular views overlooking the lake.

Traditions & shared moments

Full session structure — mornings, afternoon choice, traditions

A full session is structured to combine fun with the satisfaction of accomplishment. The program is specifically designed to provide variety and change in the camp experience. Mornings include scheduled learning opportunities in camp activities. In the afternoons, campers choose two activities from a variety of options that change daily, with most campers having a swimming and lifesaving class each day. Participating in camp traditions is a key component of attending a full camp session. Rainbow relay, finale banquet and candlelighting are examples of traditions that campers experience in the final week of camp.

Special activities and traditions — Vista, Rainbow Relay, Finale Dinner

Special activities at Glen Bernard are a cornerstone of what makes lifelong camp memories! Campers will take part in long standing camp traditions such as Vista. Each Sunday, the camp comes together to reflect on a theme. Rainbow Relay is held once in Period 1, 2 and 3. At the end of Periods 1, 2 and 3, the camp gathers for an end of session Finale Dinner. The Leaders plan and execute the program which includes toasts to campers, staff, kitchen staff, awards, performances and an end of session slide show. After dinner, we gather for a final campfire and candlelighting.

Independence, growth & leadership

Aquatic Leadership — NLS and Swim Instructor certifications for older campers

The Aquatic Leadership program is for campers entering grades 9–11 who wish to progress into an aquatic leadership role. Campers who are 16 will focus on achieving the Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard Service (NLS) and/or Swim & Lifesaving Instructor certifications. These courses prepare individuals to lifeguard and to teach and evaluate swimming strokes and lifesaving skills. Campers who are not yet 16 will learn valuable water rescue skills and work towards the Assistant Instructor certification.

GBC founding and mission — self-confidence since 1922

Glen Bernard was founded in 1922 and has an established reputation of helping girls develop self-confidence and independence. Each day is filled with opportunities to challenge campers of all ages and skill levels. Our approach since 1922 at Glen Bernard is to give campers opportunities to build self-confidence and develop successful interdependence in a safe, fun and nurturing environment.
