Clues to fit

Camper community — 24 states and 7 countries

The Camp Hidden Meadows community extends far and wide, but most of our campers hear about Camp Hidden Meadows by word of mouth from our current families in the Greater Washington, D.C., area including Virginia and Maryland. We also have many families from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, and North Carolina. Last summer, we had 24 states and 7 countries represented in our camper population.

Community and kindness — two first-timers, sibling experience

Two of our kids attended this camp as a first-time sleepaway camp experience this summer. They both had wonderful experiences! The camp staff and community were welcoming and warm and really emphasized kindness and caring. The activities & facilities were also great, and the surroundings are really beautiful - and tech-free!!

Camper's Choice — self-directed activity time

Camper's Choice is the time of day when Campers get to choose their own adventure. Each day brings a new selection of activities run by our staff. Campers can choose an old favorite, give something new a try, or do an activity that is not normally offered as a Workshop, such as playing Disc Golf or Gaga Ball. Every week, we have Tie-Dye Tuesday!

Cabin life — home away from home

The most important part of the Camp Hidden Meadows experience is Cabin Life. The cabin is your home away from home. Feeling safe and comfortable in the cabin is essential to a smooth transition into a week full of fun activities and new friends. Nestled amongst the meadows, our riverside and hillside cabins are grouped in clusters based on age and gender. Our location at about 3,000 feet of elevation allows for a cool mountain breeze and plenty of fresh air at all times. All cabins have electricity and lights and are beautifully maintained.

Program breadth — on-site workshops and off-site New Adventures

Campers choose from over 20 on-site workshops and 10 off-site adventures to craft their perfect week and guarantee they'll get to try something new. On-site activities include arts, adventure, aquatics, traditional camp crafts, and sports — from Climbing and Archery to Pottery, CHM Radio, and Organic Farming. Off-site New Adventures include Seneca Rocks Hike and Climb, Whitewater Rafting on the New River Gorge, Nelson Rocks Via Ferrata, and overnight backpacking.

Traditions & shared moments

Camp traditions — Polar Bear Plunge, Thank You Circle, Broom Dance, Big Zip

Each morning, campers and staff have the opportunity to do the Polar Bear Plunge — jumping in the river for a morning dip. If you participate five days in a row, you'll see your name up in the Lodge on that summer's Polar Bear Club board. Before dinner each day, our community gathers for the Thank You Circle — campers and staff form a circle and everyone has the opportunity to share something they are grateful for or shoutout a friend. Every camper also has the opportunity to ride our 1,000 foot zipline — starting up in the trees and zipping down into camp and across the river.

Camper Journey — Big Sibling/Little Sibling program and grade-specific traditions

Younger campers finishing 1st–4th grades are paired with older campers (finishing 7th–9th grades) for weekly bonding activities, shared meals, campfires, Camper's Choice, and special games. Older campers finishing 7th–9th grades mentor younger campers through the Little Sibling Program, sharing meals, campfires, and fun activities to build lifelong connections. Campers finishing 1st–4th grades also create a Time Capsule — 'When I'm a CIT' — filled with memories, notes, and items from their summer. Seven or so years later, when they return as CITs, they dig it up and reminisce.

Independence, growth & leadership

Leadership team — parent testimonial

The leadership team is amazing. I would not change anything. They are engaged and proactive. Our sons are excited to return!

Programs & camp life

Financial aid — Campership program

To help more families experience the joy of a summer at Camp Hidden Meadows, we offer camp scholarships ('Camperships') to families who cannot afford the full cost of a session at Camp. Camperships are awarded based on financial need, session availability, and availability of funding. The size of the grant can vary from 10% of tuition to 90%. All campers are welcome to Camp Hidden Meadows and treated the same, regardless of Campership status. Neither the child's counselor nor their cabinmates will know who received a Campership.

Food — nut-free kitchen and dietary accommodations

Camp Hidden Meadows can accommodate most food choices and allergy needs, including allergies to nuts, gluten, and dairy, as well as a vegetarian diet. We hire a specific Dining Hall Manager to work closely with the kitchen staff and our nursing staff to make sure we have options for everyone in terms of meals at camp and lunches on out-of-camp trips. We have a nut-free kitchen and a nut-free camp, which is something we take very seriously.

For parents & families

Cabin sleeping arrangements — bunk beds, bathrooms

Campers sleep on bunk beds in our simple but cozy cabins. On the girls' side, most cabins have a bathroom inside them including showers. On the boys side, all bathrooms and showers are located outside of their cabin very close by (10-20 yards at most) and within their area of cabins (called a Village). Campers are in a cabin of between 6-14 campers and 2-3 counselors depending on the layout of the cabin and age group. Our ratio is 1:6 counselors to campers in the cabin.

Food — the Lodge, meals, and snacks

Welcome to 'the Lodge'! Also known as the Dining Hall, the Lodge is a central part of the day at Camp Hidden Meadows. It is where we eat all of our meals in a buffet style setting. Campers sit with their cabin mates and cabin counselors for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Campers never have to worry about being hungry with fruit break every morning and an afternoon snack between activities.

Health center — medical staff and 24/7 nursing

At Camp Hidden Meadows, we have a well-equipped, modern Health Center stocked with the supplies needed to take care of our community. We hire a team of medical staff each summer, including two Registered Nurses and a few staff members with additional first responder certifications. There is one nurse on duty at all times during the day and throughout the night.

Lasting impact — why sleepaway camp matters today

Overnight camp has never been more valuable for kids than it is today. The opportunities for acceptance and exploration that foster confidence and independence are unmatched anywhere else. We provide a fully immersive sleepaway camp experience that doubles as a community. By being a part of a shared journey, campers can weave their own extraordinary story, rather than merely filling time.
