Animals program — llamas, horses, and farm animals
Daily classes offer campers the opportunity to care for our animal population, including our world famous llamas. Children love our farm animals, learning how to feed, groom, and care for rabbits, kittens, ducklings, miniature donkeys, llamas, alpacas, and a pot-bellied pig. Hidden Valley is also famous for summer camping's first and only llama herd!

Clues to fit
First-timer parent testimonial — warm welcome into an existing cabin
After struggling to find the right fit camp for my 10-year-old, I can joyously say we have found her summer place! The culture of HVC is truly special - she was welcomed with open arms into a cabin of kids who had been together already for 1-2 years. Every activity seemed to honor her unique spirit and interests while instilling an authentic sense of connection and community. HVC feels like camp was when I was growing up - just a simpler time. She can't wait to go back! — Cory Greenberg, Camp Parent
Elective schedule — campers choose their own activities from 50+ options
Hidden Valley Camp operates on an individualized, elective-based schedule. Campers choose their own activities daily from more than 50 studio arts, performing arts, animal care, and outdoor adventure electives, giving every child the autonomy to pursue their unique interests. Over the years we have found that the 4-week session here provides a wonderful opportunity for children to adjust and establish themselves as independent young people with peers and counselors.
Cabin life — what cabins are like and how counselors support them
Cabin life is central to the camp experience. Each cabin has full bathroom facilities, private showers and toilets, hot water, etc. Children are grouped by age/grade/gender and live with 3 to 4 adult staff who alternate time off. Staff put a great deal of effort into creating a family atmosphere in the cabins, planning group activities for Arrival Day and throughout the session. Cabin staff also bring their groups together at meals, evening programs, a cozy bedtime, etc. Directors monitor group life and meet regularly with cabin counselors.
Setting — 350+ acres in Freedom, Maine with private lake
Our beautiful summer camp in Maine provides a multitude of opportunities on 350+ acres of meadows, classic Maine woodland, and a large private lake. Acres of pasture and miles of trail support our thriving equestrian and animal care programs. Hidden Valley is a few miles inland from the lovely coastal towns of Belfast and Camden.
Every fourth day is different and exciting! We either take off on a trip or plan special events in camp. Out-of-camp day trips include Acadia National Park, Lucia Beach, Bangor State Fair, Camden Hills State Park, Ferry to Islesboro, and Belfast Skate Park. Special events include HVC Carnival, Camper Talent Show, 80's Night & Dance, International Day, Whodunit Mystery, Square Dance, Camp Musical, and Hikes and Campouts.
Why parents choose HVC — independence and confidence
For years parents have told us that their children come home from HVC more independent and confident. They feel free from the pressures, expectations, and routines of school and home. With the support of professional staff and experienced leadership, children find new and expanded personal strengths.
HVC's cabins are open, airy and fun. Campers are grouped by age or grade. Campers sleep in bunk beds. Each cabin has full bathroom facilities (shower, toilet, sink), electricity, and hang out spaces. Each cabin has a dedicated team of counselors that reside in the cabin with campers.
Facilities overview — lake, pool, arts studios, ropes course
All the land around the spring-fed lake is privately owned, so there are no motor boats or public access. At the lake is our sparkling new pavilion, sauna, and waterslide. HVC's heated pool is over 75 feet long and provides the setting for recreational swims and lessons. Over 15 Arts and Crafts facilities provide the basis for a range of artistic pursuits. Our Rec Hall, along with a recording studio and three dance studios, provides a range of creative and performing arts opportunities. Hidden Valley's Ropes Course, one of the first of its kind, was re-built in 2007.
