Clues to fit

Separate age-group programs — first-year camper attention

Your daughter will be living with and will only be participating with girls of similar age and grade. The camp's program is divided into different age ranges. Each division has its own unit leader who designs the wellness program, fitness program, and weight loss program according to each group's special needs. First year campers and their parents will receive special attention.

Independence, growth & leadership

Camper testimonial — Micayla Mirabella, gained confidence alongside weight loss

"I have made some of the best friends in the world at camp. Before walking into Camp Pennbrook, I was extremely nervous. The food is delicious and exercise is fun with an overall energy that really makes it easier. But in the long run, I have gained way more than I've lost. I gained the confidence I've been longing for and the skills to continue to reach my goals. Camp Pennbrook has truly changed my life and I couldn't be more grateful." – Micayla Mirabella

Emotional wellness — Sunday Celebration, self-confidence building

At Camp Pennbrook, we strive to consistently foster self-esteem and self-confidence building. Campers are supported in returning home feeling more positively about themselves and equipped with the tools to maintain this. Throughout each day, our counselors provide campers with encouragement and promote positive thinking. During weekly Sunday Celebration, campers are encouraged to share about their own growth moments and highlight those they have seen in others.

Programs & camp life

Food and dietary accommodations — picky eaters and special diets

Everyone receives 3 portion-controlled well-balanced meals and two snacks every day. We serve 90% of the same food the girls will eat at home — no cookies, cake, or junk food. There are special programs for all dietary needs available, i.e. vegetarian, kosher, gluten-free, lactose intolerant, etc.

Meal plan — 1,600–1,700 calories daily, designed by Registered Dietitian

Each day our wellness camp provides 3 full meals and 2 small snacks for the campers to enjoy. The meals and snacks are carefully prepared to incorporate all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that each child requires to feel healthy. The average amount of calories consumed is approximately 1,600–1,700 calories in a day. This plan has been designed by our Registered Dietician based off of age and daily activity level.

For parents & families

Cooking classes — supermarket visits, healthy meal prep

Cooking classes will allow your daughter to choose her own healthy snacks, meals, and desserts. A sense of independence will be stressed, and she will leave camp with new meal preparation procedures that are easy enough for her to prepare for herself and her family. Campers also have an opportunity to visit the local supermarket and learn how to read food labels and shop for healthier foods and snacks.

Nutrition philosophy — 'Food is fuel. Not therapy.'

We have always believed in the philosophy that 'Food is fuel. Not therapy.' Based on this philosophy, we teach our campers healthful food choices while including correct portions. Our eating program is simplistic and is not a food deprivation plan. Camp Pennbrook's goals include teaching campers how to approach health in a weight neutral manner and how to abandon harmful weight control behaviors such as calorie counting and restricting.

Nutrition program — MyPlate, culinary classes, reading food labels

Our meal and nutrition program is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate. Along with our registered dietitian, our culinary chefs have developed a delicious and satisfying menu. Campers are surprised that our menus are 90 percent 'kid friendly' so they can still enjoy most of their favorite foods. We offer culinary arts and cooking classes so the girls get a first look at how we prepare their favorite meals from camp. Campers also learn to properly read food labels and apply these tools when they go out.
