Walden West is located amongst one of the world's most amazing types of natural forests, the redwood forest. This unique habitat stands as a backdrop to our campers' experiences and discoveries. All campers will leave Walden West with a stronger connection to our natural world.
Participant health independence expectations at Outdoor School
One of the most encouraged expectations for participants attending Walden West Outdoor School is independence. Personal Care and Hygiene — participants are expected to be 100% independent with their personal care and hygiene practices. Medications and Health Needs — participants need to be 100% independent when it comes to taking medications; this includes understanding the medication they take and what it is for, being able to independently take their medication when administered to them.
Student leadership cultivation — from youngest campers to LITs
Walden West strives for the continual cultivation of leadership, which expands from the youngest of campers to the programming team. All staff nurture tomorrow's leaders by creating impactful programming that intentionally utilizes and supports peer leadership.
Food allergies — Alternative Food Table and dietary accommodations
The Walden West Kitchen provides vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free alternative menu options. In the dining hall, we have an "Alternative Food Table" with signs at each item to identify the alternative foods available for that meal for participants who have informed us of their restrictions and allergies. Although we can provide a few alternatives and the kitchen follows all Serve Safe practices, there is no guarantee that cross-contamination will not occur.
