Camper activity choice — how scheduling works, Smorgasbord
Campers will receive an orientation on program offerings and will sign up for the 1 program activity they are interested in as a free choice activity block. Occasionally campers will get the ability to have a free choice special activity AKA 'Smorgasbord'. These activities are more fluid, niche and 'silly' in nature and could range from things like: L.A.R.P, Tye-dye, Capture the Flag, nature hike, ultimate frisbee and more.
First-timer welcome — check-in games, orientation, and camper support plan
From the moment your camper checks in, staff will play games and getting-to-know-you activities that are designed to help your child feel more comfortable at camp and build camp culture. Once check-in has concluded, campers will be provided with a camp orientation and tour. Additionally, if needed camp staff will work together on a game plan for how we can best help struggling campers with guardians.
What makes Camp Bernie special — parent testimonial (community & belonging)
YMCA Camp Bernie is truly a hidden gem in the world of New Jersey summer camps. It's not just a camp — it's a community where kids are seen, supported, and celebrated for exactly who they are. As I write this, my heart still squeezes at how proud I am of my daughter and how grateful I am of the staff and the experience she had here.
Adventure activities — high ropes, zipline, climbing tower specs
The Zipline takes place at 41 feet above the ground, and lets participants soar above the treetops, across the full length of our athletic field (over 300 feet). The High Ropes Tension Traverse takes place 35 feet above the ground. Our 40-foot Climbing Tower teaches self-confidence, goal setting and team spirit — participants are securely anchored to a team belay system which allows them to face and hopefully overcome their fear of heights in a challenging but safe environment.
We are proudly Accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the state of New Jersey. Adventure elements (climbing tower, ropes courses, giant swing) are inspected by The Adventure Network, an ACCT-accredited vendor. Lifeguards are certified through the American Red Cross for pool, pond, and river activities. Archery instructors are certified by USA Archery or the National Field Archery Association.
We believe the opportunity to gain personal growth from summer camp should be accessible to all children regardless of financial situation or socioeconomic status. Our Summer Camp for All program ensures that nobody is turned away because of inability to pay. Applications for Camp Scholarships are considered on a rolling basis as long as funds remain available. The first round of applications are reviewed on March 1st. Scholarships are awarded for up to 60% of the full tuition rate. Amounts awarded are based on financial need. Camp Bernie is proud to work with NORWESCAP and DCP&P.
Camp Bernie knows the importance of good home cooking. We take special care to provide quality, wholesome meals each day. All meals are freshly prepared on-site by our camp kitchen team. With advanced notice, we can provide custom meals for those with special dietary needs (vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, allergies, etc.). We are a nut-aware facility and work hard to prevent cross-contamination. Any allergens present are clearly labeled, and we offer alternatives when needed.
