First-timer anxiety — welcoming from moment of arrival
From the moment they arrive at camp, kids are greeted with a warm welcome from camp counselors, introduced to new activities and encouraged to make new friends. Cabin unity and camp unity is promoted literally from the moment kids arrive. Wazi is extremely careful not to allow grouping or cliques or any other kind of separation between campers. Counselors are specially trained to address camper unity.
Nervous about your child's first time away? Our 'First Timer's Guide' for prospective parents will help you and your campers get prepared for a summer experience at Wazi. We'll walk you through first-time worries, frequently asked questions, how to deal with homesickness and prepare healthy separations to help avoid it and much more.
Adventure Bound is Camp Waziyatah's outdoor program and Trip Week is the time when every Wazi camper goes on a challenging and fun overnight adventure they will never forget. Our certified Adventure Bound trip leaders take kids out every day for a hike, a canoe trip, a climb, a campout, or some other great adventure. As kids get older, trips get longer and more extensive, culminating in a 3-day, 2-night trip to Acadia National Park for our oldest campers.
Adventure Park — high ropes, zip line, safety certifications
Join in on the fun with our Adventure Park's Ropes Course, featuring a climbing tower, low ropes, a challenge course, and a high ropes course with a zip line — up to 40 feet high! All of our counselors come with their own experience and additional training through an ACCT certified course for the high ropes and a PCIA certification course for the climbing tower.
Cabin life — home away from home, huddle up tradition
Cabin life at Wazi is like a home away from home. Our no-clique atmosphere means we take bonding and friendships seriously. It doesn't matter if you're a new camper or if you've been with us for years, Wazi is well known for being a welcoming place. Every night, cabins do a 'huddle up' where each camper can speak and become closer to his or her cabin mates. It's a beautiful and heartfelt time and it is integral to cabin life.
Adventure Bound — empowerment and self-confidence outdoors
Nothing makes kids feel more empowered, self-confident and strong than achieving on their own. When you get to the top of the mountain after a day's hike, put up your tent, cook dinner over an open fire, and look up at the stars… doing it all without your phone's GPS, you know you've done it yourself.
CIT program — leadership, lifeguard certification, Color War
Camp Waziyatah's leadership programs are specifically designed for campers entering 11th and 12th grade. C.I.T.s live in the C.I.T. cabins. Half of their day, our CITs go to activities just like any other camper, and the other half they work on leadership and get their Red Cross lifeguard certificate. They help out in our kitchen, do philanthropy at a local soup kitchen, and eventually take the reins to run our 'Color War' competitions. Many campers say their CIT year was the best ever.
Cost is $1,000 but fully rebated upon successful completion, effectively making cost zero. Pre-camp training starts June 10 (lifeguards) or June 16 (non-lifeguards). Past CITs preferred; non-CITs must spend first half as CIT.
Homesickness — keeping kids busy, five activity periods
At Camp Waziyatah, five activity periods and a night activity every night keeps kids in the moment and having a blast, and leaves them little time to feel homesick. Feelings of homesickness usually go away after two or three days at camp.
Kid's Choice program — campers always get what they pick
Camp Waziyatah offers a true 'Kid's Choice' summer camp program in Maine. Here, kids always get the activities they pick. That's rare for summer camps, most of which close activities based on numbers. At Wazi, that just doesn't happen. Kids choose activities weekly from a grid of choices, and twice a week we have 'Otter Days' where we do all-camp events.
